The IMO began a review of GMDSS some years back and this has now been completed. It has made some changes to the system and although much of it remains as before there are new opportunities for its continual improvement.
These changes have necessitated major changes to the text of SOLAS which will need to be understood and eventually accommodated in company safety management systems and procedures. This brief guide covers the main thrust of those changes and the areas of SOLAS affected.
